Residency for Tuition Purposes - Utah Domiciliary Ties

Domiciliary Tie Establishment Deadline by Semester

Fall Semester - May 1

May 1

Establish your Utah domiciliary ties on or before May 1 for the Fall Semester the student seeks to reclassify as a resident student. For the Undergraduate One Year Rule Policy, Graduate Residency Reclassification Policy and School of Medicine Policy, these domiciliary ties are:

  1. Utah Driver’s license
  2. Utah Voter registration
  3. Utah Vehicle registration

Please Note: If ties are not established by the deadline, you may be required to provide additional Utah ties.

Military/Veteran Domiciliary Tie Requirements

Utah Domiciliary Ties are required for the following Active Military Servicemembers & Veteran Exception Policies:

These domiciliary ties may include any one of the following:

  • Utah voter registration card
  • Utah driver’s license or identification card
  • Utah vehicle registration
  • Evidence of employment in Utah
  • Rental agreement showing the requesting student’s name and Utah address
  • Utility bills showing the requesting student’s name and Utah address

For active duty servicemembers who maintain Residency in Utah with an intent to return but who are serving outside of Utah (Includes Spouse or Dependent Child), the Utah domiciliary ties required may include any one of the following:

  • Utah voter registration card
  • Utah driver’s license or identification card
  • Utah vehicle registration
  • Copy of a Utah income tax return in the requesting student/active military service member’s name and/or their current spouse’s name, filed as a Utah resident
  • Proof that the requesting student/active military service member and/or their current spouse owns a home in Utah, including a property tax notice for property owned in Utah by the requesting student/active military service member and/or their current spouse.
