Utah Domiciliary Ties for Residency
Domiciliary Tie Establishment Deadline by Semester

Fall Semester - May 1
Establish your Utah domiciliary ties on or before May 1 for the Fall Semester the student seeks to reclassify as a resident student. For the Undergraduate One Year Rule Policy, Graduate Residency Reclassification Policy and School of Medicine Policy, these domiciliary ties are:
- Utah Driver’s license
- Utah Voter registration
- Utah Vehicle registration

Please Note: If ties are not established by the deadline, you may be required to provide additional Utah ties.

Spring Semester - October 1
Establish your Utah domiciliary ties on or before October 1 for the Spring Semester the student seeks to reclassify as a resident student. For the Undergraduate One Year Rule Policy, Graduate Residency Reclassification Policy and School of Medicine Policy, these domiciliary ties are:
- Utah Driver’s license
- Utah Voter registration
- Utah Vehicle registration

Summer Semester - February 1
Establish your Utah domiciliary ties on or before February 1 for the Summer Semester the student seeks to reclassify as a resident student. For the Undergraduate One Year Rule Policy, Graduate Residency Reclassification Policy and School of Medicine Policy, these domiciliary ties are:
- Utah Driver’s license
- Utah Voter registration
- Utah Vehicle registration

Military/Veteran Domiciliary Tie Requirements
Utah Domiciliary Ties are required for U.S. Military Veteran and/or Immediate Family Member of a U.S. Military Veteran and for Eligible Military Members, Veterans, or Dependents using Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Education Benefits. These domiciliary ties may include any one of the following:
- A Utah voter registration card;
- A Utah driver license or identification card;
- A Utah vehicle registration;
- Evidence of employment in Utah;
- A rental agreement showing a Utah address and the military veteran’s name and/or VA Education Beneficiary; or
- Utility bills showing a Utah address and the military veteran’s name and/or VA Education Beneficiary
For U.S. Military Service Member on Active Duty in Utah and/or their Immediate Family Member (Spouse or Dependent Child) and Utah Resident Serving on Active Duty Outside of Utah (Includes Immediate Family Member/Military Dependent) the Utah domiciliary ties required may include any one of the following:
- A current Utah voter registration card;
- A valid Utah driver license or identification card;
- A current Utah vehicle registration;
- A copy of a Utah income tax return TC-40, in the military service member’s or military service member’s spouse’s name, filed as a resident of Utah
- Proof that the military servicemember or military service member’s spouse owns a home in Utah, including a property tax notice for property owned in Utah.
Domiciliary Tie Requirements

Students MUST relinquish domiciliary ties (driver’s license, voter registration, and vehicle registration) held in any other state and establish them in Utah by the Utah tie deadline.
