by Professor Jennifer Shah—Associate Professor of Environment, Society, & Sustainability
When students ask me what it takes to thrive at the University of Utah, I speak from years of teaching, advising, and watching students grow into confident professionals. My own career began with a love of learning that carried me from a PhD in biology to the School of the Environment, Society, & Sustainability (ESS) here at the U. If there’s one thing my experience has taught me, it’s that the habits you build early truly shape your path in pursuing a degree.
The students who thrive stay organized, manage their time, and communicate clearly. Don’t hesitate to reach out when you have questions or need support; this goes a long way in establishing positive and professional relationships in your coursework, internships, and eventually, your careers. Establish a schedule that works for you or follow a digital calendar to keep your life in check.
One common challenge I’ve seen first-year students face is navigating the University of Utah itself. There are so many opportunities for involvement, it may be difficult to keep track of everything. My advice is to meet with advisors early and draft a four-year plan. Even a rough plan helps you avoid pitfalls, discover opportunities like double majors or certificates, and build an academic path aligned with your strengths.
While you attend the U, focus on you. Over the years, I’ve seen students transform their stress levels, boost their confidence, and find their people simply by taking advantage of campus offerings. Whether that’s the Student Life Center, the Counseling Center, Outdoor Adventures, or free access to places like the Natural History Museum and Red Butte Garden, there are so many resources available that can make your experience at the University of Utah uniquely yours.
Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to navigate this path alone. Find your community, ask questions early, and take things one day at a time. You’re beginning a journey that will shape you in ways you can’t yet imagine, and everyone at the U is here to support you every step of the way.
