Introducing Flex Path to the U
For students who haven’t decided on a 4-year plan, missed the application deadline, or can’t go to their preferred institution right away, Flex Path to the U can offer you a way to keep your momentum by taking select General Education courses as a non-degree-seeking student. Your credits will be applicable to your degree pathway if you do become a degree-seeking student at the U, and they will be transferrable to other public institutions in Utah.
Is this program right for me?
Many students who have completed high school but have not accumulated much or any college credit will qualify for this program. This program is designed for high school graduates who are not going straight into a degree-seeking program. It is ideal for students who still want to earn valuable, highly transferrable college credits at the state’s flagship institution while planning their next step.
How do I become a degree-seeking student at the U?
We want you to become a degree-seeking student at the U, and we hope your participation in the Flex Path to the U program leads to exactly that. Flex Path to the U students are guaranteed admission as a degree-seeking student if they complete the following requirements during their time in the program:
- Complete all 27 General Education credits over the course of two semesters, taking at least 12 credits per semester.
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA at the U during those two semesters.
- Meet with an advisor and complete a session in the Learning Center each semester, and complete at least one meeting with a career coach during enrollment in the Flex Path to the U program.
- Maintain good standing and avoid disciplinary infractions during enrollment in the Flex Path to the U program.
- Complete the transfer student application with all required materials by June 1.
Apply
Applying to the Flex Path is quick and easy! Just fill out the application for non-degree-seeking students and submit your high school transcript. Utah residents do not have an application fee. US residents of other states have an application fee of $55, and international students have a fee of $65.
How long does it take to receive my admission decision?
Applications are reviewed daily by Office of Admissions staff, and once an application is complete with all required materials and fee, a decision is typically sent to students within a week. Once admitted, you will need to confirm your intent to enroll, attend a virtual orientation, and meet with an advisor to select your courses.
How do I attend virtual orientation?
After confirming your intent to enroll, you will be sent an email directing you to sign up for the virtual orientation, which you can complete at your own pace. At the conclusion of your orientation, you will be guided to set up an advising appointment to review your class options.
When can I register for classes?
After completing virtual orientation, an advisor will help you select your classes. Non-degree-seeking students are eligible to register once the open enrollment period begins for the semester.

What classes can I take?
We have identified some online General Education courses that work for most students, and your advisor will help you select the best ones for you. Your options as a non-degree-seeking student in the Flex Path to the U program will be limited, but we have provided some great options.
Can I take on-campus classes?
When you meet with your advisor upon completing orientation, you can go through the available online options. If there is a need for an on-campus class, your advisor will help you get registered for that class at that time.
Can I live on campus?
Campus housing is restricted to degree-seeking University of Utah students, but we invite any Flex Path to the U students who wish to live on campus to apply for housing at Sunnyside Apartments. Sunnyside is a fantastic place to live, and it’s right by campus.
Do I have to reapply each semester?
Yes, all non-degree-seeking students at the U have to reapply each semester to continue taking courses as a non-degree-seeking student. We utilize these semesterly applications to check academic progress and verify eligibility to continue in the program. The Flex Path to the U program is designed to be taken for two semesters, fall and spring, so students will only need to apply as non-degree-seeking twice.
