First-Year Housing Scholarship
What is this scholarship?
The First-Year Housing Scholarship provides assistance for Utah resident students to live in on-campus housing. Students must be first-time, first year freshmen with demonstrated financial need based on the 2025-2026 FAFSA. This scholarship can be combined with any other university merit award from the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
- $7,000 for the year ($3,500 for Fall semester and $3,500 for Spring semester).
- For the 2025-2026 academic year only. This award is not renewable.
Who Qualifies?
Qualified applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Utah resident
- First-time freshman
- Have demonstrated financial need based on the 2025-2026 FAFSA
- FAFSA must be filed by March 1, 2025
- Must apply to live in on-campus housing
- Housing priority application deadline is April 1, 2025
- First-Year Housing Guarantee deadline is May 5, 2025
Step 1: Apply
Prospective students must first submit your University of Utah application for admission and any supporting documents.
Step 2: Complete FAFSA
Complete and submit the 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the March 1 priority date. Be sure to list the University of Utah’s school code: 003675
Step 3: Admission
Wait to be admitted and receive your letter of acceptance.
Step 4: Confirm Enrollment
Students must submit their enrollment deposit prior to applying for housing.
Step 5: Apply for Housing
Students should apply for housing via Housing U in CIS as soon as possible, as room reservation times are determined by when applications are submitted. Visit the Housing & Residential Education website for details on application and reservation times.
Step 6: Notice of Eligibility
The U will contact you regarding potential eligibility for the scholarship starting in mid-March.
Step 7: Attend the U
Attend classes and begin your education.

Living at the University of Utah is a unique experience that helps deepen a student’s engagement on campus. This scholarship provides funds to help make living un university housing attainable for as many students as possible.
Recipients who reside in university HRE on-campus housing (excludes University Student Apartments) will receive a $7,000 annual ($3,500 per semester) scholarship to be applied to housing charges only.
Students must meet all university and housing application deadlines. Important dates include:
- March 1: FAFSA must be filed
- April 1: Housing priority application deadline
- May 5: First-year Housing Guarantee deadline

This scholarship is available to students applying to the university for Fall 2025 (or Summer 2025) during the 2025-2026 academic year.
