Transfer Students
Welcome to the U
Transfer students have graduated from high school or earned the equivalent of a high school diploma by passing the GED or HiSET exam, and have previously attended a regionally accredited college or university but have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree.
You’ve worked so hard to get here, and we can’t wait to see all the great things you’ll do. Ready for the next chapter? Read on to learn how to get started.
Your Future Begins with U
Transferring Credit
The Office of Admissions cannot pre-evaluate transfer courses during the admission process. Once you have been admitted, U of U faculty will evaluate your courses and determine transfer equivalencies. Upon admission, you may view your transfer credit summary. Please note that this differs from your Degree Audit, which will be available by your orientation date and accessible from your Campus Information Services Account. You may refer to the Registrar’s transfer articulation policies here and the Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide below.
For details regarding the alignment of your transfer coursework with your major requirements, we recommend consulting the advising team within your department. Additionally, we encourage you to examine our Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide, which outlines how different courses may fulfill your degree requirements. If you have any further questions about transfer equivalencies, please reach out to articulation@utah.edu.
The U accepts domestic transfer credit from institutions who are accredited by the following Regional Accreditation Organizations:
- Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC)
- Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
- Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
- Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
- North Central Association of Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)
You may view your institution’s accreditation here.
The U generally accepts international transfer credit using the following criteria:
- The post-secondary institution must be accredited by the Ministry of Education in the country under which your school operates. Please note that the Ministry of Education may be called something else depending on the country or region. For example, if you attend school in British Columbia, that school must be recognized by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training.
- The school must be recognized by your country’s Ministry of Education as being able to grant advanced degrees (bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D).
- Post-secondary coursework must be completed at the college level; therefore, pre-university and remedial courses will not be deemed transferable. This assessment will be conducted by a member of our International Evaluation Team. Please be aware that if a course is not initially accepted for transfer, admitted students may submit petitions for credit acceptance to our Office of Appeals.
- Ultimately, courses must meet the above criteria to be considered for transfer credit, and there must be an equivalent course here at the University of Utah. For example, even if one takes a fashion course that meets the above criteria, that course will still not be accepted because the University of Utah does not offer any equivalent courses.
Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide
The Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide offers insight into how courses taken at other institutions may transfer to the University of Utah. Please note that new transfer equivalencies are regularly being reviewed. If you are unable to find your institution or course, we may have not received a transcript or course from that institution previously. If you are admitted, your courses will be reviewed by the University of Utah faculty to determine its equivalency.

While we cannot provide academic advising, students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor at their community college to review the following:
This varies for each student based on the number of transfer credits, chosen major(s) and minor(s), and any required prerequisites. It is best for students to work with an academic advisor to determine a major’s specific degree requirements.
If you attended an out-of-state regionally accredited institution, your undergraduate courses will transfer to the University of Utah. We encourage you to review our Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide to see how courses from other institutions may transfer. Please. note that new transfer equivalencies are regularly reviewed and added to this database. If you cannot find your institution or course, it may be because we have not yet received a transcript from that institution or evaluated that course. If you are admitted, U of U faculty will evaluate your courses and determine their equivalents. We encourage students to view our Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide while their degree audit is being prepared.
Yes, as a transfer student, you can pursue select online degrees as a UOnline student. This option is not available for first-year freshman. Students must decide at the time of application if they are to study on campus or online.
When applying, select “Online” for the campus location and complete the application. After admission, you will meet with an academic advisor from your intended major to finalize your status as a UOnline student. However, please note that not all majors are available through the UOnline program. To ensure your major is offered remotely, please review the available options on the UOnline webpage before applying.
