Graduate Admissions

Eligible applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college/university with at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.

Application Process

Here are the basic steps:

  • Find your department's deadlines, requirements and application process.
    Each academic department or program controls the details, deadlines and requirements of its application process. 
  • Fill out the online application.
    We recommend that prospective graduate students, including University of Utah seniors, apply for admission through the University of Utah ApplyYourself online application system, found at each graduate program's website. If you are a previous graduate student and are applying for readmission to your graduate program, you must complete the printable PDF application.
  • Pay the application fee.
    The fee for domestic applicants is $55 per program. For international applicants, the fee is $65. Some academic programs will pay the application fee for their applicants. (A late fee of $30 will be charged for any application received after the Admissions Office deadline, even if your academic program has a deadline later than this date.) Check with the graduate program to determine how much your application fee will cost.
    An additional $30 late fee will apply if your application
    is not complete by these deadlines, even if
    your academic program has a later deadline:    		 Fall: Apr. 1
    Spring: Nov. 1
    Summer: Mar. 15
  • Upload all required documents.
    You will be asked to upload a copy of all college transcripts and any additional documents required by the academic department. 
  • Complete and submit the application
    We will evaluate your file only after we receive all required fees and documents, including transcripts. 

Failure to list all schools previously attended or making false or misleading statements on the application may result in cancellation of admission status and/or loss of credit.

Admission Standards

Applicants must meet academic minimum requirements for admission. The requirements listed are the minimum set by the Graduate School of the University of Utah, and do not guarantee admission to a graduate program. Also, each academic department or program defines  additional  requirements. Applicants are evaluated with respect to university and departmental requirements and with respect to the pool of available applicants. 

The minimum academic requirements for Graduate admission are:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college/university,
  • At least a 3.00 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA,
  • Meeting the academic department's admission standards, and receiving a recommendation for admission to their program.

After you are admitted

If you are admitted to your graduate program, you will then be asked to provide an official copy of your college transcripts, sent directly from each previous school to our office at the address below. The University of Utah accepts official electronic transcripts from the following agencies only: Docufide by Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, eScrip-Safe and AVOW. Please send electronic transcripts to admisstranscripts@sa.utah.edu .

Documents submitted for admission become the property of the University of Utah and cannot be returned. 

Failure to provide final academic credentials will cause a registration hold to be placed on your record which will keep you from further registration until all missing credentials are received.

Readmission & Applying for a Leave of Absence

An offer of acceptance is valid only for the semester the applicant is admitted.  If an applicant does not atttend during his/her admitted term, the applicant must resubmit an admissions application and fee before the application deadline for the semester he/she wishes to begin. 

Once admitted and enrolled, graduate students are required by Graduate School policy to maintain continuous registration during the academic year of fall and spring semesters.  If a graduate student must "stop out", he/she should file the appropriate paperwork requesting an official leave of absence through his/her academic department. Students failing to maintain continuous registration and who have not been granted an official leave of absence will be discontinued in their graduate program. Graduate School policy requires that such students must apply for readmission into their academic program.  These students will be required to complete the PDF version of the Graduate Admissions Application.
