Starting Your First Semester at the U

As you wrap up your deferment, it's time to start thinking about coming to the University of Utah for your first semester. You'll soon be part of a unique community that will give you all the tools you need for an incredible future. See what's waiting for you and what you'll need to do to make sure you are ready to start classes when the time comes.

Starting on Time

Each deferment is approved for a predetermined length of time, as indicated on your approval letter. At most, deferment can last up to seven semesters, including summers. It's very important that you make the necessary preparations to start your first semester on time. Failure to do so can result in a loss in your admission status—meaning you might have to reapply.

Deferment Checklist

As students end deferment, it is important that they complete the Deferment Checklist, which covers signing up for a mandatory session of New Student Orientation, registering for classes, applying for housing (if applicable), and finalizing their financial aid. Deferment contacts who have been selected to assist their students can assist with these steps, as long as the student has completed the Consent to Release Form.
