Matthew Lopez at Kingsbury Hall

I chose the pool (Natatorium) because swimming and water polo have been a part of my life for so long. I had the opportunity to play for the Utah Water polo team all four years that I was a Ute.

When did you start working for the Office of Admissions:

January 2012

Why did you decide to work at the U:

I decided to work at the University of Utah because of my experience as an undergraduate. I really enjoyed my classes and my time on campus and wanted to help other students find their place at the U.

Favorite Ute memory:

I was on the water polo team all four years I was a student at the U. My senior year we had won our conference and made it on to Nationals. Though we didn't win the tournament, we finished 4th out of the top teams across the US. It was great being able to compete and represent the U at the national level.

Family members who attended the U:

My paternal grandmother was an Alumni of the U.

Favorite Salt Lake restaurant:

My favorite place to eat in Salt Lake CIty is the Gandolfo's Deli downtown. They have massive sandwiches with all kinds of condiments.

If I didn't work in recruitment, I'd be:

I'd be a full-time coach or working for non-profit human rights groups.

Tips for college:

Put yourself out there, college has a lot to offer. Don't be afraid to try new things, but don't forget to take time to do the things that are fun too. College isn't all about the hard academic classes, it's important to take classes that sound fun too so you don't get burnt out.

What do you do in your free time:

In my free time I also help coach youth water polo. If I'm not at a pool, I like to spend time rock climbing or snowboarding, just being in the mountains in general is a lot of fun.

Favorite spot/thing to do in Salt Lake:

My favorite thing to do in Salt Lake City would either be going to concerts or going rock climbing. I love music and the energy and rush you get from watching live shows. Rock climbing is how I unwind after a stressful week or how I just clear my head and relax.

Hidden talents:

I've played the drums since I was in the sixth grade and have been beat-boxing since my freshmen year in high school.
